Hanley Lake is located in Central Lake Township, Michigan. Traverse City is 39 miles southwest, and Grand Rapids is 167 miles south.

A few smaller airfields are nearby, but the closest major airport is MBS International Airport, which is typically two and a half hours away. Urgent care can be provided at Charlevoix Hospital, 27 minutes away.

Residents enjoy kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and boating. A boat ramp can be found within Thurston Park, south of Hanley Lake.
